Tips for Maximising Small Spaces in Your Home

< Back to blog list

If you live in a small home, you are most likely familiar with the feeling of wanting to open out the space you have. Here are our top tips for maximising small spaces in your home. Let’s take a look.

Use Mirrors

Mirrors are an excellent way to create the illusion of extra space in your home and make your rooms look more open and less confined. Strategically place your mirrors opposite natural light sources such as windows to magnify the light and create a feeling of openness. Consider a mirrored feature wall or adding one large mirror to a room to create a stylish focal point.

Keep It Light and Airy

Avoid dark, heavy, or solid colours on your walls. Stick to lighter, more neutral tones to open up your smaller spaces. Avoid heavy drapes, net curtains, and window dressings that make your home appear smaller and darker. Opt for lighter flooring and limit decorative pieces on the walls, choosing one or two favourite statement pieces to enhance the feeling of space.

Use Clever Lighting

There are so many lighting choices available compared to years ago, and using them wisely can brighten and open up smaller spaces. Stylish up lighters in dark corners or hidden light strips to highlight room features are excellent choices. Use smaller light fittings to avoid overwhelming a small room.

Utilise Storage

If your house has limited space, rethink your storage solutions. Any home will look smaller when it is cluttered with belongings. Consider dual-purpose furniture, such as a sofa bed or functional furniture with built-in drawers. Make use of vertical wall space with tall bookshelves or high floating shelves. Transform small corners and nooks into storage spaces with built-in shelves, and install hooks into existing cupboards for more practicality.

Declutter

It's essential not to store clutter you don't need. If something isn't functional, needed, or loved, it's time to clear out and declutter. This will instantly revitalise your space into a wider open area. If you struggle with decluttering, try the ‘one in, one out’ rule: every time you buy something, something else has to go. This will minimise clutter and make you think about your purchases, saving you money too!
