DIY or Use a Professional? - Let's Discuss

< Back to blog list

If you have projects that need to be done in your home, sometimes it’s necessary to decide whether to carry out the work yourself or get a professional to do it for you. Many factors can come in to play, including cost, time and the scope of work. Depending on what needs to be done, there are pro’s and con’s to both.

Here are some questions to help you decide if DIY is the way to go…

Is it Safe?
The most important question you should ask yourself when it comes to DIY in your home is… is it safe? We would like to begin by advising that unless you are a qualified engineer, you should NEVER attempt any electrical or plumbing repairs yourself and always call a professional as this can lead to serious injury or death. For anything else, can you complete the job safely in the time you have to do it? If you are painting a fence, this is a no-brainer but how about replacing roof tiles?

Is it Legal?
As above, there are certain rules and regulations around electrical and gas repairs in your home. Unless you are a qualified professional and Gas Safe registered, it is illegal to attempt repairs on a boiler yourself. If you want to carry out electrical work, it only becomes legal if a registered electrician has checked it and signed it off as safe. Just remember that most contractors won’t put their name to something they didn’t do themselves.

Do You Have the Skills and Knowledge?
Do you have the skills and knowledge required to start the repairs around your home? If you are confident that you can carry out the work to an acceptable standard then perhaps the DIY route is the right way for you. If you are looking for a professional standard, it might be time to get a quote for the work.

Is it Cost Effective?
Is the cost of carrying out the DIY significantly less than hiring a professional? Are you lacking the funds to call in the experts? If you have the tools and materials you need to get on with the job, perhaps it would be more cost effective to do it yourself but one thing to consider is will the end cost work out more expensive if you have to hire a professional to fix your DIY work? Will a DIY job be as long lasting as the initial cost of a professional?
