Are you heading off on holiday soon? You have probably checked the booking numerous times, made a mental note of what you are going to pack and made sure your passport is in date and still in its safe place, but have you considered the jobs that need to be carried out in your home before you leave? If not, here is our handy checklist! Let’s take a look:
Unplug Appliances
Any appliances that don’t need to be left on should be switched off to save electricity and reduce the risk of a fire. Leave your fridge and freezer on but any unnecessary appliances such as TV’s, radios, the kettle and the toaster should all be switched off at the plug to give you peace of mind.
Clear Out Your Fridge
Arriving back from holiday to a fridge full of smelly and mouldy food is an experience you could do without. Save yourself any nasty surprises by clearing out your fridge and using everything up before you go on holiday. Grab some milk on your way home for a cuppa and if you shop online, arrange a delivery for the day you get back.
Think Security
Security measures are paramount if you are leaving your home for any length of time. Don’t make it easy for intruders to gain access to your property or give them reason to believe you aren’t at home! Set your lights on timer, make sure all locks are working properly and keep your valuables out of sight. It might also be worth installing a movement activated flood light outside your home too.
Turn Your Water Off at the Valve
Avoid leaks and water damage whilst you are away by turning off your water at the main valve. Even a small leak in your home can cause a lot of damage over a week or two. Also adjust your thermostat. If you are going away in the summer months, this needs to be set lower than average and if you are taking a winter break, keep enough regular heat in your home to ensure your pipes don’t freeze or burst.
Stop Your Mail
A quick visit to the post office to put a hold on your mail will ensure your mailbox won’t be overflowing, your mail won’t be stolen and you won’t advertise to potential intruders that you are away. If you have any parcels due which you can’t redirect, ask the delivery company to deliver to a trusted neighbour instead.
Talking of trustworthy people, perhaps you could arrange for a trusted family member or friend to keep an eye on your property and water the plants whilst you are away?
The only thing left to do now is figure out what you need to pack and head off an enjoy a relaxing holiday!
